Thomas Riggs is a Tax Partner and Managing Director of the firm’s large and diverse Financial Services tax practice. His global client base includes hedge funds, fund of funds, asset management companies, PE and VC investment firms, as well as their high net worth owners and principals. Tom works extensively with the firm’s International and Family Office tax groups, while also leading the Firm’s Blockchain/Digital Asset tax practice.
His 40 years of financial sector experience is broad, including M&A and transaction advisory, cross border entity structuring, start-ups and new business formations, tax planning for high net worth individuals including deferred compensation and exit/succession planning, and tax controversy/dispute resolution. He is also a recognized expert in the formation, operation and liquidation of partnerships and limited liability companies.
Tom is a prolific speaker and author, with his most recent efforts ranging from presenting at the annual New York State Bar Association Start Up Venture Institute, chairing the tax panel at the annual Private Equity U.S. Forum in New York City, and recently published and widely read articles including, “The Taxation of Digital Assets in the U.S.”, “Taking Your Fund Private: Transitioning from Investment Fund to Family Office”, and “Opportunity Zones: Structuring and Operational Considerations”.
In addition to his Law and CPA licenses, Tom has also held various SEC and FINRA designations over the years, including that of Series 3 Commodity Trading Advisor (CTA), Series 7 Securities Sales Representative and Series 65 Registered Investment Advisor (RIA).
